Seeing Tomorrow: Insights About the Global, National and Regional Economy for 2015

This Economic Summit was held in the Metropolitan Club on the 67th floor of Willis Tower on March 6, 2015. Our Economics and Finance panel members provided their insights into the latest economic and financial events and policy changes in the U.S. markets. They focused on the uncertainty that we are seeing in international economies, the energy sector and local economic issues. The Economic Summit forecast how recent trends fit into our expectations for economic indicators and policy changes. The panel members then held a Q&A to end the event. "The Economic and Energy Outlook" - William Strauss

William StraussWilliam A. Strauss is a senior economist and economic advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which he joined in 1982. His chief responsibilities include analyzing the current performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector for use in monetary policy. He produces the monthly Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index and organizes the Bank’s Economic Outlook Symposium and Automotive Outlook Symposium. In addition, he conducts several economic workshops and industrial roundtables throughout the year.

His research papers include analysis of the manufacturing sector, the automotive sector, the Midwest regional economy, the trade-weighted dollar, business cycles and Federal Reserve payments operations.

Strauss has been interviewed on numerous television and radio shows and quoted in the major business magazines and newspapers. He has also provided testimony concerning manufacturing issues to the U.S. Senate.

He is a past president of the Chicago Association of Business Economists; a past board member for the National Association for Business Economics; a member of the National Business Economics Issues Council; a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the University at Buffalo; a member of the Advisory Board for the Center of Excellence on Human Capital, Technology Transfer, and Economic Growth and Development; a member of the Advisory Council for the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Economic Education; a member of the Economic Advisory Committee for the Council on Competitiveness; a board member of Global Interdependence Center; and a member of the Council of Great Lakes Governors Maritime Advisory Committee

“Recent Developments in Crude Oil Market, Implications on the US Economy" - Reza Varjavand, Ph.D.

Reza VarjavandReza Varjavand (Ph.D., University of Oklahoma) is an associate professor of economics at Saint Xavier University's Graham School of Management in Chicago. He has been an avid participant in many professional organizations and active in the areas of research and presentations. His research interest includes economics of health care, pedagogy of teaching, economic development, especially in the developing countries, economics and religious practices. Varjavand is a regular contributor to Op Ed News, a United States based progressive/liberal news, activism and opinion website. He is the author of a recently published memoir entitled From Misery Alley to Missouri Valley. He has as received the Excellence in Scholarship Award in 2004 at Saint Xavier University and the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2005 from the Graham School of Management.

"An Outlook of the Public Firms Headquartered in the Chicago Area and the State of Illinois" - Song Wang, Ph.D.

Song WangSong Wang, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of finance at the Graham School of Management of Saint Xavier University. Dr. Wang has produced numerous papers that are presented at national and regional finance conferences, including Financial Management Association Conference (2013), Midwest Financial Association (2011, 2014), Eastern Financial Association Conference (2011), Academy of Finance (2014), European of Financial Management Association Conference (2014) and Financial Management Association European Conference (2014). His papers appear in journals such as “Applied Financial Economic and Managerial Finance.” He also served as an anonymous reviewer for “Journal of Financial Markets,” “Journal of Financial Issues” and the Midwest Finance Association Conference of 2015. He is also a co-director for the “Journal of Financial Issues” (2014-15).

Panel Moderator - Monzurul Hoque, Ph.D.

Monzurul Hoque

Monzurul Hoque, Ph.D., is a professor of finance and Chair of the Graham School’s Department of Economics and Finance where he serves as program director. Dr. Hoque brings more than 25 years of professional experience to this role. He serves on the school’s executive leadership team, was a key member of its AACSB accreditation team, and recently completed a four-year term as Chair of the School’s Assurance of Learning Committee. Dr. Hoque holds leadership positions in professional finance organizations, including serving as president of the Academy of Finance in 2004-05. He is on the editorial boards of the “Journal of Finance Issues,” the “International Journal of Finance and Accounting Studies” and the “Journal of Asia-Pacific Business,” and has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Hoque holds an M.S. in finance and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
