Parent Orientation Schedule 2018

Welcome to Parent Orientation at Saint Xavier University! The schedule will be the same for all five sessions.

June 24, 28, July 8, 11 and 15


Butler Reception Room
1 - 2 p.m.

Begin the day with Parent Orientation check-in and receive your program materials. Staff from a number of offices will be available to welcome you and answer any questions.

Resident Parent Session

Warde Academic Center Room L-217
1:30 - 2 p.m.

Resident parents are welcome to join the staff from the Office of Residence Life to learn more about the resident experience. From building basics, to what size sheets to send with your student, the staff will provide an overview of community guidelines and expectations, the programming model, what to bring (and not bring) and answer questions.

2 - 2:40 p.m.

Meet members of the University leadership including Laurie M. Joyner, Ph.D., President of Saint Xavier University, staff and Orientation Leaders at this official kickoff to your summer visit!

Academics at SXU

2:40 - 3:30 p.m.

In this session, you will learn about SXU's General Education and major requirements and academic expectations of your student.

Community Wellness

3:30 - 4 p.m.

Have you talked with your student about making good decisions and being safe on campus? Are they prepared for the rigors of collegiate life? Learn about our compassionate and collaborative efforts to support students in their academic and personal success while providing a safe learning environment. In this session, Dean of Students, Public Safety and Counseling Center staff will provide an overview of community standards and intervention initiatives.

Meet With Your Student's College/School

What changes should I expect? How can I support my student? What does my student need to do to be successful? Other than attending classes, what expectations does SXU have of my student? Get answers to these questions and more at this interactive session.

Money Matters

5:15 - 5:45 p.m.

Meet representatives from the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of the Bursar who will provide tips and strategies to help you understand your student's rights and responsibilities concerning financial aid eligibility and payment obligations.

Mercy Rocks!

McDonough Chapel
5:45 - 6:15 p.m.

What is the Mercy story we tell and why do we tell the story of Saint Xavier's founding visionaries? What does it mean to attend a 172 year-old Mercy Institution of Higher Education? In this session that utilizes visual images, story and ritual, you'll experience what makes an SXU education unique and how through your student's time at SXU he or she will encounter the core values of respect, excellence, diversity, compassion, hospitality, integrity, service and learning for life.

6:15 - 7 p.m.

Enjoy a light dinner while you explore this information fair featuring academic and student services departments. Representatives will be on-hand to answer any questions you might have and provide useful information that will help your student navigate available resources.

Student Services Panel

7 - 7:45 p.m.

Learn about life outside the classroom at this interactive session. There are many ways your student can (and should!) get involved on campus and many resources available to help your student succeed. Representatives from Career Services, Center for Accessibility Resources (Disability Services), Learning Center/Writing Studio, Shannon Athletic Center, Student Activities, Student Media and the Student Success Program (SSP) will be present.
